The futuristic concept intrigued onlookers with its many technological features at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

First and perhaps foremost in the NS4's technological repertoire is a next-generation plug-in Hybrid Synergy Drive system that achieves improvements in fuel economy, acceleration and driving range compared to current systems. The NS4's advanced powertrain is also smaller and lighter than current plug-in systems and takes less time to charge.

The NS4's human-machine interface focuses on a touchscreen that's modelled on the functionality of a smartphone. The touchscreen allows for control of audio, air conditioning, navigation settings and more.

Other nifty features include the NS4's pre-collision system (PCS). It uses radar and stereo cameras and, at night, near-infrared beams to detect and react to lane departure, as well as possible rear-end collisions and pedestrian collisions, and it can pre-apply the brakes and manipulate the steering to prevent or minimize collisions.

In addition to the PCS the NS4 concept comes equipped with adaptive driving beam headlights that ensure near-high beam brightness whilst helping to eliminate the glare against oncoming drivers and pedestrians. Another pedestrian-focused initiative is the NS4's pop-up hood which deploys at the rear so as to lessen the injury to a pedestrian in the event of a head-on pedestrian collision.

The NS4 concept also features a radar-based blind spot monitor, as well as inner and outer rear view cameras which work in conjunction with the blind spot monitor to enhance outward visibility. Another nice touch is the glass technology which incorporates anti-fog film, UVA and UVB light ray absorption and a hydrophobic coating which helps to improve visibility during rainfall. The NS4's glass also employs anti-solar film with radio-wave transparency to reduce the cabin temperature; in simple terms, it's like having a high-tech invisible sunshade installed at each window.
